Kusal Mendis approached for England County Stint

Sri Lankan batter Kusal Mendis has been approached to play for Nottinghamshire in England’s County Championship for a short stint, sources told Islandnews.lk.

According to sources, Mendis is being considered as a replacement for Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who recently concluded his spell with the county side.

The proposed move is reportedly subject to clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), as is customary for national players participating in overseas leagues.

While Sri Lankan bowlers have frequently featured in county cricket over the years, it is a rare opportunity for a Sri Lankan batter to be considered by a county side.

Mendis, a regular in Sri Lanka’s national setup across all formats, last featured in the recent series against Bangladesh. A county stint could offer valuable red-ball exposure and help him further develop his game in English conditions, which are considered among the most challenging for subcontinental batters.

If the deal is finalized, Mendis would join a short list of Sri Lankan batters who have played in the County Championship

Neither Nottinghamshire nor Sri Lanka Cricket has issued an official statement on the development. (Islandnews)
