Sri Lanka has dropped two places in the latest global safety rankings, according to the Safety Index by Country 2025 Mid-Year report released by global data aggregator Numbeo.
The country now ranks 61st with a Safety Index score of 57.7, down from 59th and 57.9 in the previous 2024 report.
The annual index evaluates countries based on crime levels and perceptions of safety, with a higher score indicating a safer environment.
The United Arab Emirates topped the 2025 index with a score of 85.2, ranking first out of 148 countries surveyed. The UAE also recorded the lowest global crime rate, with a Crime Index score of just 14.8. In contrast, Haiti ranked lowest in safety with a score of 19.0 and the highest crime index at 81.0.
Gulf nations featured prominently in the top rankings. Andorra placed second (84.8), followed by Qatar (84.6), Taiwan (83.0), and Macao (China) (81.8). Oman secured sixth place with a score of 81.4, while Saudi Arabia and Kuwait ranked 14th and 38th, respectively.
At the lower end of the spectrum, countries such as Papua New Guinea, Venezuela, Afghanistan, and South Africa joined Haiti in recording the highest crime levels and lowest safety scores.
Numbeo compiles its indexes using user-contributed data on perceived safety and crime levels, which are then aggregated and compared across countries and cities worldwide. (Islandnews)
