Australia’s Governor General concludes official visit to Sri Lanka

The Governor General of Australia, Samantha Joy Mostyn, concluded her official visit to Sri Lanka on Sunday (10 Aug).

During her visit, which commenced on 06 August, the Governor General met President Anura Kumara Disanayaka and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and held bilateral discussions on matters of mutual interest.

The shared aspirations of the two Indian Ocean countries for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region were acknowledged, along with the identification of new areas for enhanced cooperation.

Governor General Mostyn further attended a gathering organised by the Australian High Commission to meet prominent women leaders in Sri Lanka, and visited Bandaragama, Mirissa and Weligama to inspect several development projects supported by the Australian Government.

She also visited the Tsunami Museum and paid her respects at the Tsunami memorial in Hikkaduwa, before proceeding to the historic Galle Fort.

The visit was aimed at further strengthening bilateral cooperation and exploring opportunities to expand existing areas of collaboration for the mutual benefit of both countries.

The Governor General’s visit is the third high-level visit from Australia this year. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Richard Marles and the Governor of South Australia, Frances Adamson, visited Sri Lanka in June.

According to Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry, the successful high-level visits reflect the interest of both countries to elevate the existing bilateral partnership to higher levels. (Islandnews)
