Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has voiced strong concern over the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, warning that it poses a serious threat to Sri Lanka’s democratic institutions.
In a statement, Kumaratunga said the move amounted to a calculated assault on the country’s democratic values, stressing that its implications extend far beyond one individual or political party. She said the development endangers the rights of society as a whole and urged all political leaders to resist such actions.
Kumaratunga added that she joins in expressing her unreserved opposition to what she described as initiatives that undermine democracy and must be opposed collectively. (Islandnews)
