Sri Lanka’s main opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), has strongly condemned the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, calling it a planned political conspiracy. The party said the arrest, publicized on a pro-government social media account, challenges the rule of law and exposes what it claims is the government’s hidden agenda to establish a one-party state.
In a press release, the SJB criticized government initiatives such as the Clean Sri Lanka project, regional and district committees, and restrictions on local government funding, arguing these moves undermine multi-party politics. The party also warned that efforts to control public service unions reflect a dictatorial approach.
The SJB called on all political parties and civil organizations to unite against anti-democratic actions, stressing that collective action is crucial to prevent the rise of a one-party hegemony in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
