Former MP Athuraliye Rathana Thera was remanded until September 12th by the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court today.
Police were searching for Rathana Thera in connection with the alleged 2020 abduction of Our Power of People Party (OPPP) General Secretary Ven. Wedinigama Wimalatissa Thera.
Rathana Thera is accused of being linked to the abduction of Ven. Wedinigama Wimalatissa Thera, whom he is said to have forced to sign documents enabling him to obtain a National List seat in Parliament.
The former MP was reported to be evading arrest after the Colombo Crimes Division officers visited his Rajagiriya temple, as well as other temples, meditation centres, and housing complexes, but were unable to locate him.
As such, last week (18), the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court issued an arrest warrant for former MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera.
He was remanded after having appeared before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court today. (Islandnews)
