Police have identified the man shot dead near the Bolgoda Bridge in Bandaragama on Thursday evening as a former prison officer.
The victim, 57-year-old Lalith Kumara Kodagoda, a resident of Panadura, was travelling in a car when two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire using a T-56 rifle, police said. He died at the scene.
Investigators said more than 20 rounds were fired at the victim. Kodagoda had previously been released on bail after being implicated as an informant in the killing of underworld figure Samayan.
Police suspect the attack was carried out as an act of revenge. Bandaragama Police have launched further investigations to apprehend the suspects. (Islandnews)
