China has officially completed the donation of all school uniform fabric required for the 2025 academic year in Sri Lanka, valued at Rs. 5,171 million.
The official certification exchange ceremony marking the completion of the donation took place on July 16 at the Ministry of Education in Battaramulla. Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong were present for the occasion.
The fabric, a grant from the Chinese government, covers the entire school uniform requirement for all state and state-assisted schools for 2025.
During the event, Prime Minister Amarasuriya said that the donation is a reflection of the long-standing and friendly cooperation between China and Sri Lanka. “In 2023 and 2024, China provided a significant share of our national school uniform requirement. This year, they have generously supplied the entire need. This support comes at a difficult time for Sri Lanka and is deeply appreciated,” she said.
She also confirmed that Sri Lanka has already requested continued support from China for the 2026 school year through the Department of External Resources.
Ambassador Qi Zhenhong reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka. “China will always stand by Sri Lanka as a trusted friend. These school uniforms are not just clothing but a symbol of the deep-rooted friendship between our two nations,” he said.
Officials from the Chinese Embassy and the Ministry of Education also attended the event. (Islandnews)
