Craft Exhibition by Prison inmates kicks off in Battaramulla

The “Sirasara Shilpa 2025” national craft and trade exhibition, featuring creations by inmates from across Sri Lanka’s prisons, was officially inaugurated at Diyatha Uyana in Battaramulla.

The exhibition aims to elevate the creative skills of incarcerated individuals to a national platform and promote their rehabilitation through art and vocational work.

The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of Justice and National Integration Minister Harsha Nanayakkara and Women and Child Affairs Minister Saroja Savitri Paulraj. Also in attendance were Attorney General President’s Counsel Parinda Ranasinghe, Deputy Minister of National Integration Muneer Mulaffer, and senior officials from the Prisons Department and Justice Ministry.

Inmates from 28 prisons across the island contributed handcrafted items, including wooden furniture, metal tools, garments, organic produce, and household goods. Visitors can purchase these products at the exhibition.

The event is open to the public on July 16 and 17, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Diyatha Uyana. (Islandnews)
