Former Norwegian peace envoy to Sri Lanka Erik Solheim has called for the immediate release of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, expressing deep concern over his health during detention.
In a statement, Solheim said Wickremesinghe was the leader who stood up to rescue Sri Lanka when the nation faced its worst political and economic crisis in 2022. He described the accusations against the former President as “without merit”, adding that even if proven, they would not constitute criminal or unacceptable behaviour under European standards.
“I give full support to the Sri Lankan Government’s campaign against corruption, but it should focus on real issues,” Solheim noted, while urging authorities to free Wickremesinghe.
Solheim, a former Norwegian Minister and international climate adviser to Wickremesinghe during his presidency, joined several Sri Lankan and South Asian politicians who have voiced concern over the former President’s arrest. (Islandnews)
