An unsuccessful shooting attempt by two individuals who had arrived on a motorcycle has been reported at a nightclub in the Colpetty area on Saturday night (19).
According to reports, the intended target was Dematagoda Ruwan, the brother of Dematagoda Chaminda, who is currently sentenced to death for the assassination of former MP Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra.Â
Ruwan, who is said to be involved in multiple criminal activities and frequently visits the nightclub, is reported to have arrived later than usual that evening.
The gunman, who had arrived earlier, had attempted to enter the nightclub to confirm whether Ruwan had arrived, leading to a verbal confrontation with the security guard at the entrance.
During the incident, the gunman had abandoned the firearm at the scene and fled with his accomplice, leaving behind the motorcycle as well.
The T-56 assault rifle and the motorcycle were later taken into police custody.Â
Investigations are being carried out by the Western Province North Crimes Division into the incident. (Islandnews)
