Four killed in separate road accidents


Four people were killed in separate road accidents reported across the country yesterday (22), police said.

The fatal incidents were recorded in Mahiyanganaya, Pelmadulla, Dehiowita, and Katugastota.

In Katugastota, an 18-year-old motorcyclist from Akurana died after his bike veered off the road and crashed into a lamp post near Siyambalathenna junction. His pillion rider was admitted to hospital with injuries.

In Pelmadulla, a 59-year-old man standing on the Colombo–Hatton main road at Tembiliyana was fatally struck when the door of a luxury bus’s battery compartment opened unexpectedly and hit him.

Meanwhile, on the Colombo–Batticaloa road at Pathakada junction, a three-wheeler collided with a cow and overturned, before being struck by an oncoming car. A 63-year-old passenger from Kuruwita succumbed to injuries, while three others were hospitalized.

In Mahiyanganaya, a 37-year-old man from Mapakadawewa was killed when his motorcycle collided with a cab at Gonagala junction on the Mahiyanganaya–Padiyatalawa road. The cab driver was also injured.

Police said the bodies of the deceased have been placed at the respective hospitals, while investigations are ongoing. (Islandnews)
