Heavy showers expected in some provinces today

The Department of Meteorology says atmospheric conditions are becoming favourable for evening thundershowers in the Northern, North-Central, Uva and Eastern provinces in the next few days.

Accordingly, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the North-Central, Central, Uva and Eastern provinces after 1.00 pm today.

A few showers may occur in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and the Galle and Matara districts.

Fairly strong winds of about 40 kmph can be expected at times over the Southern province.

Meanwhile, light showers may occur in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Matara via Galle.

Winds will be westerly to south-westerly and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-55 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota will be fairly rough at times.

The wave height may increase to about 2.5 – 3.0 m in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Hambantota via Galle.

Therefore, there is a possibility that nearshore sea areas extending from Colombo to Hambantota via Galle may experience surges due to sea waves. (Islandnews)
