Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is suffering from dehydration and could face risks of heart, kidney, or other complications if not properly treated, Deputy Director of the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Rukshan Bellana said.
He made these remarks while briefing the media in Colombo on the health condition of the former president, who was transferred from the Prison Hospital to the National Hospital and is currently receiving treatment under intensive care.
Responding to questions on whether Wickremesinghe would be able to appear in court next Tuesday, Dr. Bellana said, “How can a patient currently under intensive care appear in court?”
Providing further details, Dr. Bellana explained that he personally examined the former president and confirmed signs of dehydration, with abnormal changes in blood and other indicators. He noted that Wickremesinghe needs strict rest and treatment for at least three days, warning that without proper care, complications could escalate into heart or kidney failure.
The doctor said Wickremesinghe’s condition was triggered after spending nearly ten hours in court without adequate food, water, or cooling facilities due to a power outage, which had likely caused heat stress.
“At present, he is under close monitoring by several specialist teams at the intensive care unit. If managed properly, we expect his condition to improve within two to three days. Without intensive care, however, dehydration could lead to complications affecting the heart and brain,” Dr. Bellana added, stressing that the next 24 hours would be crucial. (NewsWire)
