The son-in-law of former Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena appeared before the Matugama Magistrate’s Court in connection with a case involving a luxury jeep allegedly smuggled into Sri Lanka and fraudulently registered.
The vehicle was first reported to be registered under the name of Abeygunawardena’s daughter, Melanie, and later sold in October 2024 to the son of SJB MP Jagath Withana.
While MP Withana claims the vehicle was purchased for Rs. 45 million, investigators say it was declared at only Rs. 20 million, raising suspicions of document tampering and tax evasion. (Islandnews)
