An on-arrival service counter to issue driving licenses for foreign tourists will be launched at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) premises in Katunayake starting today (August 3), Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Kamal Amarasinghe announced.
Until now, the service was available only at the Department of Motor Traffic in Werahera. However, the new facility aims to provide greater convenience for tourists, most of whom rent vehicles near the airport and drive themselves during their stay.
Amarasinghe noted that tourists often use motorcycles, three-wheelers, and light vehicles for travel, but under the new system, licenses will be issued only for motorcycles and light vehicles. Driving permits for heavy vehicles and three-wheelers will not be issued. (Islandnews)
