Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is not an isolated incident but a serious challenge to democratic politics. He made the remarks at a meeting of opposition party leaders held at his office today (25).
Premadasa stressed the importance of all opposition parties uniting to face this challenge, announcing plans for both short- and long-term strategies. He also appointed a committee with party secretaries to coordinate future actions.
Former President Maithripala Sirisena, addressing the gathering, said the two main priorities were securing Wickremesinghe’s release and safeguarding democracy. He urged all parties to set aside political differences and act together.
The meeting concluded with an agreement for opposition parties to reconvene on August 27 at the Opposition Leader’s office. (Islandnews)
