PM Harini to head Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO


Minister of Education, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Sri Lanka National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Nalaka Kaluwewa, has been appointed as the Vice Chairperson of the Commission. The appointments were made on Tuesday (29) at the Ministry of Education in Battaramulla, with the participation of the Prime Minister.

The Commission has been established with the primary objective of facilitating collaboration among all relevant ministries in implementing UNESCO’s key focus areas of education, science, culture, mass communication, social sciences, and the environment in line with national development goals.

The appointed members of the Commission are;

Subject matter experts – 

  • Dr. Asha de Vos, Chandra Wickramasinghe, Dr. V.V. Madawattegedara, and Saminathan Vimal.
  • Secretary General of the Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO – Professor Prabath Jayasinghe
  • Secretary to the Ministry – Nalaka Rathnayaka
