PTA & Online Safety Act: President reveals Govt position

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding human rights, stating that key legal reforms and accountability measures are essential to that effort.

“Our stance is clear; the Prevention of Terrorism Act must be repealed, the Online Safety Bill must be amended and hidden crimes and unresolved murders in this country must be thoroughly investigated,” the President said.

He made the remarks while addressing Parliament on the country’s economy.

The government has come under growing scrutiny over its election pledges to address three key human rights concerns: the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), the Online Safety Bill, and the investigation of unresolved murders and major crimes.

The President also acknowledged there has been an increase in the number of shooting incidents reported in the country. President Dissanayake also said that a number of Police officers and prison officials are involved in crime operations, vowing to address the issues. (Islandnews)
