UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardene said the deteriorating health of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was a direct result of the conditions he faced during his detention.
Abeywardene told reporters that Wickremesinghe had long maintained a disciplined daily routine, including fixed times for meals, medication, and rest, which had been severely disrupted after he was taken into custody.
He noted that Wickremesinghe was asked to appear in court at 9.30 a.m., where he provided testimony for several hours. “Afterwards, he was kept inside the court premises for another five to six hours without electricity until nearly 10.30 p.m. Altogether, he was held under pressure for almost 12 hours,” Abeywardene said.
According to him, this disruption caused undue strain on Wickremesinghe’s health and contributed to his present condition. (Islandnews)
