Robberies : Two suspects arrested in separate raids

The Maharagama Police and Western Province Northern Crimes Division have arrested two suspects wanted in connection with a series of thefts and robberies in separate operations conducted on July 23.

In the first incident, Maharagama Police apprehended a 26-year-old resident of Godigamuwa, Maharagama, along with a stolen motorcycle and two fake number plates. Investigations revealed the motorcycle had been reported stolen in the Homagama Police division. The suspect was also linked to multiple house break-ins and thefts in the Kottawa, Kesbewa, and Maharagama police areas. Police recovered several stolen items including a television, camera, and five mobile phones.

In a separate operation, the Western Province Northern Crimes Division arrested a 47-year-old suspect wanted on multiple warrants related to a string of armed robberies. The suspect, a resident of Gatahatta, was taken into custody in the Mahabage police area. Police said he had previously escaped custody on February 25 while being transported from Mahara Prison to the Wattala Magistrate’s Court. At the time of arrest, the suspect was found in possession of a forged national identity card.

He is believed to be involved in several armed robberies in Ragama, Kandana, Minuwangoda, and Sapugaskanda, and is also under investigation for possession of a live grenade in the Ja-Ela Police division. Four arrest warrants had been issued against him.

Both suspects remain in custody as further investigations are underway. (Islandnews)
