From January to June 2025, the Sri Lanka Embassy in Doha has recovered a total of Rs. 83.16 million in death compensation for the next of kin (NoK) of Sri Lankan nationals who passed away in Qatar.
Of this amount, Rs. 23.39 million was directly disbursed to NoKs through the embassy’s efforts, while Rs. 59.8 million was transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism in Colombo for further distribution.
The recovered compensation includes settlements from cases pending since 2023.
Ambassador Sithara Khan and Minister Counsellor Dharmasiri Wijewardane coordinated with Qatari companies, the Consular Affairs Division, the Qatari government, and legal partners to secure the payments.
In 2024, the mission had recovered and disbursed Rs. 172.99 million in compensation to the families of deceased Sri Lankan nationals. (Islandnews)
