Sri Lanka has moved up to 91st place in the 2025 Henley Passport Index, improving from 96th last year. Sri Lanka’s latest ranking, alongside Iran, reflects visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 41 destinations for Sri Lankan passport holders.
The Henley Passport Index, based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), ranks passports worldwide according to the number of destinations holders can access without a prior visa.
Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the list, while Singapore holds the top spot in 2025.
Notable changes in the 2025 index include a decline for the UK and US, which now rank 6th and 10th, respectively — a continuation of a long-term downward trend.
The US, once at the top in 2014, is now close to falling out of the top 10 for the first time in the index’s 20-year history.
India recorded the largest jump, moving up eight spots from 85th to 77th, with access to 59 destinations.
Saudi Arabia saw the biggest gain in visa-free access, adding four destinations and rising to 54th place with a total of 91 destinations. (Islandnews)
