A luxury jeep allegedly smuggled into the country and fraudulently registered was sold by the daughter of MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena to the son of SJB MP Jagath Withana, state newspaper Dinamina reported.
According to the report, the vehicle was initially registered under the name of Melanie Abeygunawardena, before being sold to MP Withana’s son in October 2024.
While Withana claims the jeep was purchased for Rs. 45 million, investigators say records show a declared value of only Rs. 20 million, raising suspicion over potential document manipulation or tax evasion.
The Central Anti-Corruption Task Force, which is probing the matter, believes the vehicle was illegally imported into Sri Lanka and its data in the Department of Motor Traffic’s system had been altered.
The jeep was seized in Matugama while being driven by Withana’s son, Rasika Buddhika Pinnagoda Withana.
Despite several attempts, police have been unable to locate Melanie Abeygunawardena for questioning and say she may be arrested as the investigation progresses.
MP Jagath Withana has said they were unaware of any irregularities linked to the vehicle and that it was purchased in good faith as a normal, legally registered vehicle
The suspect has been remanded until August 1 by the Matugama Magistrate. A legal team including a President’s Counsel appeared on his behalf. Authorities are continuing investigations with assistance from Sri Lanka Customs and the Department of Motor Traffic. (Islandnews)
