Twin meteor showers to light up skies

Sky watchers can look forward to a spectacular display featuring not one, but two meteor showers peaking simultaneously tonight, extending into the early hours of tomorrow.

According to the American Meteorological Society (AMS), the Southern Delta Aquariids and the Alpha Capricornids are expected to produce dozens of stunning meteors per hour.

The Alpha Capricornids and Southern Delta Aquariids peak from Tuesday night (29) into Wednesday morning (30), and the showers will remain active until 12 August.

According to NASA, the Perseids, considered the”best meteor shower of the year,” peak in roughly two weeks, from the night of 12 August, through the morning of 13 August.

With the moon only 27 per cent full, the meteors will be easily visible. This event will be observable worldwide, and the moonless night will ensure dark skies, increasing the likelihood of spotting bright shooting stars.

The Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids will peak together, with astronomers predicting at least 25 meteors per hour.

Though both hemispheres will get a glimpse, the view will be more clearer down South.

The constellations Aquarius and Capricornus rise higher there. Early morning, before sunrise, offers the best views.

  • How to prepare before going to see the meteor shower

Those hoping to see the shower should also do the following, according to the AMS:

  • Find a dark location away from light pollution
  • Give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the dark
  • Avoid looking at phones or bright lights. (USA Today/ News 18)
