The Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committee on Economic Development and International Relations has been informed that out of the 5 Chabad Houses established in Sri Lanka, 2 have been registered under the Companies Act.Â
This was disclosed at the meeting of the Sectoral Oversight Committee held under the aegis of MP Lakmali Hemachandra in Parliament recently.
The committee further inquired about the policy adopted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Tourism with regard to the establishment and functioning of Chabad Houses in Sri Lanka.
The matter was raised given the contemporary dialogue surrounding domestic security concerns and the functioning of such Chabad Houses.
Responding to the Parliamentary committee, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Tourism confirmed that 2 Chabad Houses in Sri Lanka have been registered under the Companies Act.Â
Upon inquiry as to the spending capacity of tourists, the officials stated that though it is possible to calculate in general, there is no mechanism in place to navigate spending capacities based on the nationalities of the tourists.Â
However, the ministry officials stated that an average Israeli tourist spends approximately US$150, which is comparatively high. (Islandnews)
