A total of 878 individuals were arrested for drug-related offences during special operations conducted by the Police yesterday, with the aim of suppressing drug-related and underworld activities in Sri Lanka.Â
According to the Ministry of Public Security, 530 individuals with outstanding warrants were also taken into custody during the multiple raids conducted across the country.Â
The Police had also seized 06 illegal firearms during the operations jointly carried out by the Sri Lanka Police, the Special Task Force, and the Tri-Forces, under the supervision of the Ministry of Public Security.
The Police had also seized large hauls of narcotics. In the Chavakachcheri Police Division, 284.415 Kilos of Kerala cannabis were seized, and in the Wattala Police Division, on Old Negombo Road, 1.230 kilos of heroin were confiscated.
Additionally, special traffic operations were also conducted yesterday, during which 103 persons were arrested for drunk driving and legal action was taken against 4,060 individuals for various other traffic violations.
Throughout yesterday, 6,676 personnel from the Sri Lanka Police, Special Task Force, and Tri-Forces participated in these special search operations. A total of 26,125 individuals were inspected, along with 10,791 vehicles and 8,091 motorcycles.
Under the supervision of Minister of Public Security, Ananda Wijepala, continuous operations are being carried out to eradicate drugs, suppress organized criminal activities, arrest individuals involved in narcotics, and minimize road accidents nationwide. (Islandnews)
