Sri Lanka’s world No. 1 javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has received a fresh boost after the Sports Ministry pledged to provide him with a new set of javelins following the damage to his competition equipment during air transit.
Tharanga returned to Sri Lanka on September 15 after completing a remarkable 2026 season, highlighted by victories at the Diamond League Final and the World Athletics Ultimate Championship. The 23-year-old remains at the top of the men’s javelin world rankings, with his outstanding 92.62m throw in Rome standing as the world-leading mark of the season.
The damaged equipment included javelins used during his historic performances, adding a disappointing note to an otherwise extraordinary homecoming. In response, the Sports Ministry has pledged to provide replacement javelins so that the champion’s training and preparations can continue without interruption.
Tharanga’s breakthrough season has already established him as one of the leading names in world javelin, with Commonwealth Games gold, a Diamond League title and the World Athletics Ultimate Championship crown adding to Sri Lanka’s growing presence on the international athletics stage.
