Christa Pike Regains Consciousness After Failed Execution in Tennessee

Death-row inmate Christa Pike has regained consciousness after surviving a failed lethal injection execution in Tennessee, according to her lawyers. Pike, 50, reportedly woke up in hospital after spending several days unconscious and is now able to speak, although only to a limited extent.

Her legal team says Pike was initially believed to have suffered severe brain damage and might not survive. She is now receiving intensive medical treatment for complications including pneumonia, a blood clot and severe swelling in her arms.

A Tennessee judge has ordered authorities to preserve evidence from the September 30 execution attempt, including IV equipment, syringes, medication-related materials and records concerning Pike’s condition before and after the procedure.

The failed execution has prompted questions about what went wrong. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has paused executions in the state for the remainder of the year while officials seek answers. Pike’s lawyers are also considering possible legal action over the incident.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Her case is now drawing renewed attention following what her lawyers describe as an unprecedented survival after a lethal-injection execution attempt.
