England secured an 89-run victory over Sri Lanka in the opening ODI at Chester-le-Street, taking an early lead in the three-match series. After being sent in to bat, England were bowled out for 265 in 48.1 overs, with captain Harry Brook making 67 and Will Jacks contributing an unbeaten 46.
Jacks then produced a match-winning performance with the ball, claiming a career-best 5 for 22 as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 176 in 37 overs. Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis top-scored with 42, while Dunith Wellalage added a quick 45, but the visitors struggled to build partnerships throughout the chase.
Sri Lanka debutant Sachindu Colombage impressed with three wickets for 44 runs, while Asitha Fernando also claimed three wickets. However, England’s disciplined bowling and Jacks’ decisive spell ensured a comfortable victory.
The second ODI will be played in Leeds on Thursday, with the final match scheduled at The Oval on Sunday.
