At least 27 people have been killed in two separate mass shootings in South Africa, occurring just hours apart, according to reports.
In the first incident near Johannesburg, 17 people were killed and 15 others injured after eight gunmen reportedly opened fire at a bar on Saturday evening. Police said the attackers fired at people outside before continuing the shooting inside the venue and setting two vehicles on fire.
A second shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday near Cape Town, where 10 people were killed and 11 others injured outside an entertainment venue. Five victims reportedly died at the scene, while another five later died in hospital.
Police had not announced any arrests or a clear motive for either attack at the time of reporting.
The shootings come amid continued concerns over gun violence and organised crime in South Africa. Authorities have linked some previous mass shootings to gang-related disputes, including conflicts connected to drug trafficking and illegal mining.
The latest incidents follow another deadly shooting in Durban, where 11 people were reportedly killed days earlier. South African authorities continue to face pressure to address the country’s persistent levels of violent crime.
